After passing the award winning cotton fields, the winding road went left, and the travelers found themselves driving through a settlement of small comfortable houses overseen by a two story house that looked as if it were from another era. Little did they know that this house had a story to tell about the settlement of Gwinnett County and the plantation called The Promised Land. Thomas Maguire built the house after he came to America from Ireland in 1818 and after acquiring his first property with the lottery of 1820. About a hundred years later, Margaret Mitchell frequently visited the Promised Land to gain inspiration when researching her now famous book, "Gone With The Wind".

Gwinnett County Magistrate Judge Mark A. Lewis has issued a permanent injunction against the city of Snellville. However after the eight week series started, most were surprised that the show ratings surged as the series continued.

When Gwinnett County issues about $270 million in new revenue bonds for water and sewer improvements soon, it will get the low-interest benefits of AAA ratings thanks to new credit assessments from Standard and Poor's, Moody's Investor Services and Fitch Ratings. The County's overall credit rating remained AAA with a stable outlook as reported by the ratings agencies early this week. Commission Chairman Charles Bannister said,

by Tom Livsey, There is a historic community in south Gwinnett County, Georgia, that is confused with the formal process in naming a new school in its historic community for a well known family outside its 150 year old boundary. Both families are two of Gwinnett's "First Families". The Livseys' and the Snells'. The former just want to have a new community school named in the honor of their ancestors. The latter already has a city, as well as, other institutions of learning named in their family forefathers honor in the county. The Livseys' have maintained the economical, racial and political interest of the county for the last 150 years in the Promised Land community. Its their name that is synonymous with this area of Gwinnett, not the Snells'. There are over five streets named in their honor, not one for the Snells'. Currently the name of the new elementary school in the Promised Land is going to be named after a Snell, and not a Livsey....We want to know Why?

Wayne Shackelford, a giant of Gwinnett County who led the state Department of Transportation during a period of explosive development in Georgia, died Tuesday afternoon. He was 75. He suffered from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, said his son, Larry Shackelford. Steeped in Gwinnett County politics and friends with heavyweights like developer Wayne Mason, Shackelford as a businessman developed real estate projects including Gwinnett Place Mall.

Sometimes us seniors get overlooked. Volunteer staff from the restaurant served 45 seniors a full meal including salad, entre and dessert. It was an encore performance from the previous month when they had served at the Buford Senior Center .

One day a girl licked the envelopes and postage stamps instead of using a sponge. That very day the lady found a cut on her tongue. A week later, she noticed an abnormal swelling of her tongue. She went to the doctor, and they found nothing wrong.. Her tongue was not sore or anything. A couple of days later, her tongue started to swell more, and it began to get really sore, so sore, that she could not eat. She went back to the hospital, and demanded something be done. The doctor took an x-ray of her tongue and noticed a lump. He prepared her for minor surgery. When the doctor cut her tongue open, a live cockroach crawled out!!!!

Courses for enrichment, remediation, or acceleration are 9 weeks in length and begin Aug. 10 or 17 for the first quarter, and Oct.12 or 19 for the second quarter. Registration ends Aug. 12 for the first quarter...

By Emily Green Georgia's financial crunch means less money for education, and two rural school districts are resorting to drastic measures in an attempt to cut costs. School desks will be empty on days they normally wouldn't be due to shrinking budgets. Peach County, in Middle Georgia, is cutting its school week from five days to four. Students, who start class today, will attend school from Tuesday through Friday. Murray County, in North Georgia, will maintain a five day school week. However, it will cut 20 days from the school year.

In an effort to help students understand their need to get to class, we will start sweeping the halls at South Gwinnett. Students who are caught in the hall 5 minutes after the bell without a pass will be escorted to holding rooms. The students will remain in the holding room for the entire period. Students will also be assigned a zero for any work they missed due to their tardiness.

This year's annual "back to school" sales tax holiday will start July 30 and continue until midnight Aug. 2, 2009. Most seven year old are better equipped than their parents when it come to working with computers, dealing with settings on the cable TV remote and other electronics around the house. They are prepared for almost anything in childhood, except knowing how to handle a situation where they are the target of a "Bully"."While there is no definitive evidence that bullying makes kids more likely to kill themselves, now that we see there's a likely association, we can act on it and try to prevent it," said review lead author Young-Shin Kim, M.D., assistant professor at Yale School of Medicine's Child Study Center.

Prosecutors in Fulton County unveiled a 69 count indictment against what's come to be known as the Old Virginia Burglary Ring. OAKLAND, Calif. A former transit officer has been charged with murder in the shooting death of an unarmed black man that set off violent protests, officials said Wednesday. Johannes Mehserle, 27, was arrested Tuesday in Nevada and on Wednesday appeared briefly in court, where he waived extradition to California. He was expected to be returned to California later Wednesday. Witnesses said Mehserle, who is white, fired a shot into the back of 22-year-old Oscar Grant while the man was lying face down on a train platform at a station in Oakland. Grant and others had been pulled off a train after reports of fighting, as New Year's Eve revelers were shuttling home after midnight.

A source confirmed that Robert Matthews has been promoted to an offensive assistant's position at Oklahoma State. For three seasons, the 31-year-old Matthews had been OSU's director of recruiting.
