A great time to make time for your future

By Robert Bellamy, OurTown National News Editor,

Start small.
Big retirement dreams are great! And years of working hard and doing the right things mean you get to make them as big as possible. But that also means taking proactive steps today to help prepare for the realities of your future. Saving enough for retirement is perhaps the most important step in that preparation. It’s what will support your lifestyle and fund your goals. You don’t have to make big changes. Doing a few small things today, will help you build healthy saving habits down the road. Once you get started, you’ll see how easy it can be.

Set goals.
Where should you start? The answer is different for everybody, but a great way to begin planning for your future is to assess where you’re at today. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to help set some retirement goals and organize your next steps:
-When would I like to retire?
-What is my current savings levels and mix of retirement products?
-How much can I afford to save for retirement each month?
-How will my monthly budget change in retirement?
-What is my investment risk tolerance?

Know the facts.
Retirement has changed. Whereas a generation ago Americans could rely on pension plans and Social Security benefits, future retirees will likely rely more on personal savings to meet their needs. And with people living longer than ever before, those needs may need to be met for 20 or 30 years. In other words: don’t just look forward to a long retirement – expect it.

Consider tax deferral.
When thinking about the different places to put your retirement savings, consider the benefits of tax deferral. That is vehicles that allow your money to grow tax free until you’re ready to withdraw it. This strategy keeps your earnings within the investment longer and may allow you to accumulate at a faster rate. Think about it: the money you would have paid as taxes on your gains stays put, and continues to pursue growth potential.
