(Lawrenceville, Ga., Oct. 3, 2013) – Commissioners gave plans to demolish and rebuild most of South Gwinnett Park near Snellville a go-ahead Tuesday. They approved a $230,490 contract with Hayes, James and Associates Inc. of Norcross to develop construction documents for the project, which will leave the existing roller hockey facility intact. Construction will begin in late 2014.

The new park will feature an artificial turf field for football, lacrosse and soccer, rebuilt youth baseball and softball fields, a new concession and restroom building, a new playground, paved walkways, a maintenance building, and expanded parking on the current 23 acres. The park is at 2115 McGee Road near the intersection of U.S. 78 and Scenic Highway.

“The South Gwinnett Athletic Association has organized youth sports programs there since 1966, and I know all the kids and parents are celebrating this big step forward,” said District 3 Commissioner Tommy Hunter. “We’re all grateful for the SPLOST funds that allow these much-needed upgrades to improve the usage, safety and efficiency of the park.”
