Great turnout for Dr. Martin Luther King  Day

By Tricia Bailey, OurTown National Reporter,

The day started out with a warm ceremony on a beautiful day at New Jerusalem Baptist Church that was led by Pastor Elijah Collins.

The celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr was led by an over flowing congregation on a one mile trek to Snellville City Hall, shoulder to shoulder hand to hand smiling faces that resemble the United Nations.

From the elaborate introduction by Snellville's first female mayor, Kelly Kautz, all in attendance could sense the high excitement and high energy amongst the well attended crowd.

It was hundreds who attended this event which was a day of anticipation for decades for many who lived here. The parade of people were led by the very precise group of the South Gwinnett ROTC and followed by the South Gwinnett Marching Band.

The event opened up with the national Anthem followed the singing of Cheyanne Osoria.  Next to follow was the NJBC Sanctuary Choir and the guest speaker Mr. Melvin Everson, City Council of Atlanta Ga reflecting on the man Dr. Martin Luther King Jr as the man who had a dream .

Quoting " Be willing to take risk" so that you can inspire others as King did. And in closing such an eloquent speech Mr. Everson reminds us that we all have responsibility with freedom to empower ourselves and others around us.

Other performers were the Triple Seven Dance Company, Lea Nelson, Meke Oyatt, Ms. Wyatt, closing with a very special guest performance by Yewande who sang two of her songs from her new CD, 'War'.
