As they say "no news is good news". Also the large pipe that was across the beach has been taken away following repairs.

Unfortunately NPP has formally applied for permission to appeal to the Supreme Court. They wont necessarily get permission it isnt a foregone conclusion. It depends on whether the Supreme Court thinks there is any merit in further discussion about any of the very complicated legal points raised which have all been pretty thoroughly discussed during the two previous court cases. Our legal team is busy writing a response for the Supreme Court saying why we dont think permission should be given. This has to be submitted by next Tuesday (7th May). Were not sure at the moment how long after that the Supreme Court are likely to take to decide whether they want to hear the case. If they decide they do want to hear it, we understand it could take up to 2 years to get to court

The Friends of Tide Mills have just completed their April meeting.15 of us (including four very welcome new members), and in glorious sunshine, managed to collect 17 bags of assorted rubbish. It is lovely to see some of the vegetated shingle plants starting to emerge at last, in a few weeks the whole area behind the beach will be a sea of colour once more, always worth seeing and appreciating. Also spotted was a pair of Ringed Plovers, obviously intending to breed if possible. We have a couple of breeding warning signs in place still and if visitors could avoid the area between the signs this would be much appreciated.

Easter Day started sunny but unfortunately deteriorated during the day, this did not stop some hardy souls exploring the promenade. Attached are some photos at the Buckle Beach end highlighting the new slope/angle of shingle on the front to try and stop the steep shelf at the waters edge. This looks a much improved and natural slope. Let's hope it is effective and hopefully when the sun does return we can all use it safely.

Meet Rafael, Raul and Rosa. These are our first fox cubs of 2013. These three two boys and a girl - came into care yesterday after being found wandering very cold and fairly lethargic on a lawn in Seaford. We are not sure what has happened to their mum, but it does appear they have been abandoned or orphaned rather than their mum moving them from one location to another. Rescuer Robert and I collected them from Beachwood Vets in Seaford where they were assessed and then taken to WRAS carer Monica Russell who is now looking after them at her home in Eastbourne.

The Active Travel (Wales) Bill was laid in the National Assembly for Wales on the 18 February 2013. Cycle Seahaven (and our other campaign partners) will be using this Bill as a template of what can be done at national level to promote cycling for everyone.
OVCN are forging ahead with their vision for a cycle network between Lewes and Newhaven, connecting up the towns and villages of theLower Ouse with the South Downs Way. The section between Kingston and Lewes has been given the go-ahead,and now OVCN are requesting planning permission from SDNPA (South Downs National Park Authority) to put a bridleway between Rodmell and Southease which of course would be open to cyclists. This is only a small one mile section, but it helps the overall scheme to provide cycle access along the entire route.

We have already heard some people calling for a cull of foxes, as a knee jerk reaction to the alleged attack. It is important to keep things in perspective. Nobody has ever been killed by a fox, as opposed to the many injuries to and several deaths of adults, children and babies each year from pet dogs. We dont hear people calling for a cull of pets when these incidents happen.
Seaford Musical Theatre would like to welcome new members as they start rehearsals for their June production of 'The Wiz' - an adaptation of the Wizard of Oz - made famous by the 1978 film version starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson.

Despite regular meetings between Seaford Town Council, the Seaford Seafront Theme Group and Environment Agency local management over the last couple of years it is sadly the case that we are still no further forward in gaining back our safe, true amenity beach we had up to the mid 1980s. Even requests for a short section of safe beach continue to be ignored.

Whilst the driving theory test has some optional cycling awareness questions, not everyone is tested with these and the practical driving test does not have any particular focus on cyclists. If drivers are not trained to be aware of cyclists and how to drive around them they will retain the lack of awareness after they pass their test. British Cycling supports the motoring organisations which are calling for harder tests and the inclusion of cycle awareness in the test. British Cyclings manifesto says:changes to the driving test to make cycle awareness a core part of driver training and testing with emphasis on how much space to give cyclists and how to safely overtake cyclists. We need to make this happen and stop people being needlessly killed on the roads. If you agree then please sign the online petition here

But there is also the caveat that we reserve the right to refuse access where cycle spaces are already occupied or where services are especially busy. This is welcome news for some, but falls short of a full solution where cycles are always accommodated on all public transport.

Hundreds of people attended the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid which took place on Sunday 12th August at the Memorial Green, South Way, Newhaven. The sun shone and there was a wonderful atmosphere on the green as wreaths were laid by civic dignitaries, including the Lord Lieutenant, the Mayor of Newhaven, the Deputy Mayor of Dieppe and representatives from the Canadian High Commission, the US Embassy and the French consulate. However, it was the wreaths laid by veterans which the watching crowd appreciated the most. August 1942 saw Newhaven playing a major part in the ill-fated Dieppe Raid. At the time, the allies situation was grim. The Germans had penetrated deep into Russia. The British Eighth Army in North Africa had been forced back into Egypt. In Western Europe the allied forces faced the Germans across the English Channel. Since the time was not yet ripe for mounting a full scale invasion, the allies decided to mount a major raid on Dieppe. Designed to foster German fears of an attack in the west and compel them to strengthen their channel defences at the expense of other areas of operation, the raid would also provide an opportunity to test new techniques and equipment, and be the means to gain experience and knowledge for planning the great amphibious assault.

It will also help us reduce our carbon emissions and protect the environment as our street lighting produces approximately 8000 tonnes of co2 each year.
Police have been informed this morning that there has been a high Value theft from Chailey School which is situated off Mill lane in South Chailey.Entry was forced and a large quantity of Apple Computers has been stolen.

One of the South Easts last remaining kittiwake colonies is back and breeding well, the RSPB can reveal. The first chicks have begun to hatch at Seafords Splash Point, East Sussex indicating a successful year for this important seabird colony.Kittiwakes, medium-sized gulls with black wing tips, only come to shore once a year to breed. The East Sussex cliff-top colony, made up of around 1100 pairs, has become increasing significant in recent years as kittiwakes struggle to breed in strongholds along the coast of northern England, Scotland and Wales.

This Press Release was found on Lewes District Council website posted today. "Roundtable Entertainment has bought Lewes Road Recreation Ground in Newhaven for a potential hotel development.Lewes District Council sold the land on the 29 June 2012. As a direct response to the public consultation which closed on the 20 June 2012 the following decisions were taken:
ON THE SECOND JULY I RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM NILAM POPAT WITH THE REPORT THAT THE DISTRICT COUNCIL WANTED "TO SET UP A CROSS PARTY WORKING GROUP" NO MENTION OF THE SITE BEING SOLD. OM 3RD JULY I RECEIVE A MAIL FROM NEWHAVEN TOWN COUNCIL SAYING "Newhaven Town Council has been informed by Lewes District Council that the sale of Lewes Road Recreation Ground was completed on Friday, 29th June."SOUNDS TO ME LIKE SOMEONE HAS SOMETHING TO HIDE SOMEWHERE WHO ARE THE DEVELOPERS. WHAT IS GOING ON LEWES. See stories below.
Newhaven Town Council has been informed by Lewes District Council that the sale of Lewes Road Recreation Ground was completed on Friday, 29th June.Town Mayor, Councillor Graham Amy said We are shocked and dismayed that this sale has gone through with an absolute minimum of public consultation and no notice taken of the strong objections made in the very short time given. The land remaining available for recreational use for four years is far from adequate reassurance for the people of Newhaven.Councillor Amy has today written urgently to the Chief Executives of both Lewes District Council and East Sussex County Council asking whether they intend to sell any more land in Newhaven.
We have received a reply from Nilam Popat Corporate Head - Communities & Enterprise Lewes District Council in response to the statutory notice advertising Lewes District Council's proposed sale of the Lewes Road Recreation Ground for potential hotel use. They are hoping that this will be the first step in a major regeneration proposal for Newhaven which will be the subject of full consultation with residents if the regeneration projects are progressed.
Analysis of the publics views on the Seaford Community Partnerships Seafront Exhibition, held in March, are now available. The exhibition was visited by about 800 people including more than 100 children Great enthusiasm was shown for many of the childrens and students ideas, for example, the provision of larger sand pits and even a paddling pool on the beach at the same level as the promenade will be examined. The need for more shelters was an important theme to emerge and various ideas were on display, such as, upturned Boats, and Severn Sisters shaped walkways and associated shelters. The large chess pieces were much admired as was the volleyball games area.
A busy wildlife rescue charity is being inundated with calls from the public reporting escaped peacocks across East Sussex. Over the past 3 weeks the charity has now received more than 40 calls about peacocks. East Sussex Wildlife Rescue & Ambulance Service (WRAS) is only a small local charity run off limited funding from kind and generous donations, and says it doesnt have the time, funding nor resources to be dealing with these calls.
By Andy Lock, on June 7th,2012 The A259 between Newhaven and Peacehaven has a long narrow section of the highway that has been separated from the road. Many road users believe this to be a cycleway and they get annoyed when cyclists do not use it as such. In fact, this was created to keep heavy traffic off an unstable section of the A259 that was subsiding. Unfortunately this section is not ideal for cyclists a lot of puncture-causing debris collects in the gap between the road and pavement, and its not easy for road sweeepers to deal with. Cycle Seahaven have suggested that the gap is filled to make the footpath much wider so that debris cannot collect, possibly making it suitable for a shared walking/cycling lane.
Now the sun has reappeared and we are able to get back in the garden, another coloured moth showed itself, The Cinnabar moth, Tyria Jacobaeae. Looking up the RSPB website it appears this moth flies during the day and is easily spotted due its red and black colours.

For your information, Lewes District has been subject to a number of attempted breaks to outbuildings including garages, sheds and containers. There have also been a few attempted breaks to homes and on a limited number of occasions, access has been gained. In some of these incidents, the building, whether home or outbuilding, has been insecure. This has provided an easy opportunity for a crime to be committed.
Dear East Sussex WRAS supporter,One of our responsibilities at East Sussex WRAS is to be open to new methods of fundraising that we feel will both benefit East Sussex WRAS and be acceptable to our supporters. In case you do not know, we have formed a mutually beneficial relationship with SureAid whereby East Sussex WRAS will receive 6% of the annual premium paid by our supporters when they buy their home insurance through SureAid.
Your Local have received several calls from the public reporting suspicious activity, specifically where persons viewed as sus have been seen looking at four wheel drive vehicles in places where it has been thought they should not be.
You may be aware that our district suffered a number of thefts earlier this year where personal items were stolen using slight of hand tricks and distraction techniques. Items such as mobile phones and wallets / purses were taken. These techniques were also used to trick cashiers into parting with too much money during transactions.
We have received calls relating to suspicious persons approaching the elderly and vulnerable in our communities. Reports indicate that these persons have been offering services to remove dangerous trees or do repairs to property which are not necessarily required. These people can be persuasive, convincing and persistent.
This is an outrageous decision by LDC to try and creep under the radar and sell off one of the public amenity behind the residents back. If someone wants to build a hotel in Newhaven, they should be directed to the Harbour Development area, which I would have thought to be better for them and the Town.No wonder the town is in a poor state when Councillors make decisions like this. The young in Newhaven do not have many places to meet and play now, so don't be surprised when you get more vandalism in the town if you go ahead with this sneeky proposal.
SALE OF LEWES ROAD RECREATION GROUND NEWHAVEN TOWN COUNCIL OBJECTSNewhaven Town Council has moved quickly to make a strong and detailed objection to the proposed sale of Lewes Road Recreation Ground by Lewes District Council to a developer who wants to build a hotel.

Over 700 adults and 100 children visited the exhibition over the weekend. We had positive comments from many people and received donations of about 300. Work has now started on analysing the large amount of data we obtained. Luis Daz at the University is currently writing up the project and publicising the students work to senior management. Incidentally, all the students' material displayed on the walls in the exhibition will be made available to us in a few weeks or so.
Doesnt that appeal? Just what an enhancement to Seaford and its seafront needs for it to succeed! The Gap which has been identified. When Seaford Head School took its Rock and Jazz Orchestra musicians abroad to Venice, Paris, Garda, Barcelona all 45 of them they (or the agent booking their tour) found no problem in locating suitable venues for them to perform. Why? Because every city, town and tiny hamlet in Spain, France and Italy seemed to have its dedicated outdoor public-performance area.

The result of the Judicial Review into East Sussex County Councils decision to register the sandy West Beach as a village green has been announced and it is disappointing news for Newhavens residents. Mr Justice Ouseley, the judge in the case, has concluded that the beach cannot be registered as a village green.
The Open Spaces Society,(1) the national organisation campaigning for the protection of greens, is dismayed by the High Court judgment that West Beach at Newhaven in East Sussex is not a village green.(2) Yesterday (21 March) Mr Justice Ouseley ruled that the land did not qualify as a green because its use by local people for informal recreation was incompatible with its statutory use as a port by the owner, Newhaven Port and Properties Ltd.

Good news for local cyclists. The Lewes to Kingston route has been given the go ahead. This has come as a total (but welcome) surprise to many people but it seems its the outcome of a Linking Places Fund of 15m that Norman Baker announced in February to encourage cycling and walking,to provide access to employment and reduce carbon emissions.
