We have received a reply from Nilam Popat Corporate Head - Communities & Enterprise Lewes District Council in response to the statutory notice advertising Lewes District Council's proposed sale of the Lewes Road Recreation Ground for potential hotel use.
They are hoping that this will be the first step in a major regeneration proposal for Newhaven which will be the subject of full consultation with residents if the regeneration projects are progressed.
They are keen to set up a cross-party working group and have also asked the developer to undertake widespread consultation before moving forward with their plans. However, having listened to responses, we have asked that the formal play facility be excluded from the sale and negotiated with the developer that the recreation ground will remain open to the public for four years.
Councillor Steve Saunders, Deputy Leader of the Minority Group and Ward Councillor for Newhaven Valley said: “I am very keen to find out what Newhaven residents think about this proposal. It’s very important that people comment on this potential loss of open space. I can assure residents that if Councillor Page gives the go ahead for this proposed sale, I will be doing my best to ensure that suitable alternative open space is provided to meet local need. I am mindful of the deadline for responses and urge as many as possible to give their feedback on the issue.”
