  1. How Much Do You Pay for Financial Advice?Thu, 27 Jul 2017 14:09:44 +0000
There was an interesting article in today’s WSJ about the impact of automation on the financial advice business. Quick summary: automation is forcing costs down from the traditional 1% annual fee. I expect we’ll see more advisors moving to the hourly structure from the asset-based fee structure. My question to you is: Do you use […] More...
  2. Why You Should Always Be Ready for a Market Sell-OffThu, 23 Feb 2017 16:49:25 +0000
Interesting: Why You Should Always Be Ready for a Big, Scary Stock Market Sell-Off Here’s how I normally deal with sell-offs: 1) I don’t look at the 401(K) balance. It’s not going to do me any good to do so because it’s not going to change our strategy. 2) I think of all the additional […] More...
  3. Trader Joes Has Some Unhappy EmployeesMon, 07 Nov 2016 12:00:25 +0000
[Rant on…] Are we becoming a nation of spoiled wimps? Based on this article I read in Sunday morning’s Houston Chronicle, I would say the evidence is mounting that we are. Trader Joe’s has been a shopper’s favorite for years now. They have a great reputation of friendly service and great prices, but the article […] More...
  4. 8 Reasons Why I Loathe Social SecurityThu, 27 Oct 2016 12:00:30 +0000
I know lots of people love social security. I know lots of people consider social security a successful government program. I disagree. A comment left in my previous post about the 2017 changes coming to social security, inspired me to list out what I don’t like about the program. So, here they are: 1. I […] More...
  5. Meet Glover QuinWed, 26 Oct 2016 20:06:29 +0000
This is a great piece about financial savvy of Detroit Lions safety, Glover Quin. Doesn’t happen often enough. He saved 70% of his income the first three years of his NFL career and lived on the other 30%. Too many young players get the big money and go on wild spending sprees. Not Mr. Quin. […] More...
  6. COLA for 2017 Social Security Recipients: .3%Tue, 18 Oct 2016 17:40:30 +0000
I just saw that the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for social security recipients is going up a whopping .3% (yes, that’s point three percent!). What really stinks is the amount of income subject to confiscation (that’s really what it is, you know) is going up from $118,500 to $127,200, a WHOPPING 7.3% INCREASE! That […] More...
  7. Employers Are Looking for Employees with Soft SkillsThu, 01 Sep 2016 00:08:55 +0000
This piece comes to us via a daily email I receive from Wells Fargo. Employers are struggling to find workers with soft skills, such as critical thinking, empathy, and the ability to get along with colleagues. The Wall Street Journal cites a recent LinkedIn study that revealed 58% of 291 hiring managers believe the dearth […] More...
  8. How Much is Your Social Media Account Worth?Wed, 31 Aug 2016 11:00:06 +0000
Longtime readers of AFM know that I’m not a fan of misleading people. I don’t publish paid blog posts without a disclaimer stating that the post is an advertisement. Advertisers don’t care for that, but I think it is the right thing to do. That said… I read a short piece by Sapna Maheshwari in […] More...
  9. Back to School Average Spending: $673Wed, 31 Aug 2016 02:06:40 +0000
From an article I read in today’s Houston Chronicle: “Parents expect to spend an average of $673.57 on electronics, clothes and notebooks this year, compared with $630.36 last year, according to the National Retail Federation, an industry trade group. In total, parents of kindergarten through 12th-grade students say they will spend $27.3 billion on school […] More...

  5. In law or OutlawSun, 31 May 2009 08:07:00 +0000
So last week my mom called me and told me she sprained her ankle...and she asked me if I would come and help take care of the house and my little brother and sister. Of course I was more than happy to go because they live about and hour and a half away and this was a chance to spend time with them and get a break from my mother in laws house. So I go and I figured I would stay for about a week. My husband clearly aware of my plans. So on Sunday as I was packing my things to head home, I get a text from my sister in law saying: "Hey...don't wanna get into your business, but maybe you should think about coming home. Adam could really use your help." Now tell me if I am crazy, but I was irate! She had the nerve to tell me I should come home and help my husband as if he was incapable of telling me himself. My husband and I are adults and will decide when I come home! It was none of her business when I came home! And I called her...we had our words, and I hung up on her after I was called the "B" word! {Didn't want to type it out in case there are little ones eyes around!}When my husband called to confront her and tell her that she had no right butting in our business, she proceeded to tell him that our marriage has problems! WHAT!?!?! News to me! Mind you, this is the sister in law that just got married, the one I helped do the Bachelorette party, wedding stuff, paint her house, babysit her kids and dog, etc.etc... and she still has yet to offer helping us do anything to ours!I don't know what to do! I hate confrontation, and drama! I really think people should mind their own business...I would never have done that to her or anyone for that matter. I am not that type of person! I don't know what to do. If I don't move into that house soon {which by the way is 2 houses down from hers} and out of my mother in laws house, I am going to freak out and go on a crazy rampage!!!Wow! That feels good to vent! Oh and by the way I stepped on a nail today, it went threw my shoe into my heal, doesn't feel the greatest! So might I say that I am so stressed out! From this house to my Etsy orders. I should have waited to start my Etsy store! I really did not think that I would be selling so much! Not that it is a bad thing but when I am working on orders and not my house, people think I am just sitting around crafting!?! I wish!Sorry about the long post....we all know sometimes we just need it!Please let me know if anyone else is lucky enough to have in laws like mine!?! More...

  10. Oh What A Day!Thu, 07 May 2009 04:50:00 +0000
Okay...so, this morning I wake up to a call from our renter in Virginia that a TREE fell through the roof at 1:30 in the morning! Mind you we are in Indiana! I felt so bad... our renter is so great! We could not be luckier to have had God bless us with her as a renter. She said that she is taking photos of the HUGE tree limb that fell through the roof. AND THANK GOD it didnt hurt anyone. It came inches from her son and actually punctured her sons bed. I am so thankful he is okay. He told his mom he is going to have such a cool story to tell all his friends at school. So at least he is not scarred for life. I could care less about the house. I am just glad everyone is alright! So on a much lighter, less woody note: Here below is a before photo of the window in the front of the house. And Tada like Magic a window...with shutters. And incase you are wondering why there is such a gap at the bottom of the window! Well I am planning on putting a flower planter box!!! YAY I am so excited about that. Here is a shot of part of the kitchen in Drywall. I am so proud because I have measured and hung some peices by myself. Woo Hoo! Hubby told me that I am getting good so now I have to help hang all the rest! Now this is something I am so proud of. I made a planter bow for my garden to go in! I painted it, cut the wood and screwed it all together {all by myself}! I got this idea out of the Better Homes & Gardens magazine. More...
