Ohio eyes school consolidation Would having fewer districts save money and improve academics? Written by Michael D. Clark

Put a big question mark behind this number: 614.

Ohio has 614 public school systems in its 88 counties, and for the first time in decades, those with the power to make changes intend to find out if reducing that number through consolidation could save money and improve academic performance.

Gov. John Kasich has called for aggressively studying the first sweeping consolidations of Ohio's districts since the 1960s, and is about to do something about it. He has asked the Legislature to create a commission exploring school consolidation, the first Ohio governor in decades to even broach the idea.
