    Today is Martin Luther King Jr. day and there are many events scheduled around the city today celebrating the life of Dr. King. Did you know that Dr. King was originally named Michael Luther King, but later changed his name to Martin, In pursuing his work for the civil rights movement, Dr. King was arrested upwards of 20 times and assaulted at least 4 times, Dr. King won five honorary degrees; was named Man of the Year by Time magazine in 1963; and became not only the symbolic leader of American blacks but also a world figure, At the age of thirty-five, Martin Luther King, Jr., was the youngest man to have received the Nobel Peace Prize. When notified of his selection, he announced that he would turn over the prize money of $54,123 to the furtherance of the civil rights movement? Forty years after his death, Dr. King's life continues to serve as an inspiration to us all. His work and his legacy/

    There has been a lot in the news lately about apologies...Congressman Joe Wilson to President Obama, Kanye West to Taylor Swift. You may think this has all been overblown in the media. I would disagree. Both Congressman Wilson and Kanye West owed the President and Ms. Swift apologies. In my opinion, Congressman Wilson should have apologised on the floor of Congress. He showed disrespect for the institution as well as for President Obama personally and for the office of the President. Kanye West delivered his apology, not as promptly as should have been done, but it was delivered and accepted. People seem to think that freedom of speech gives them the right to say anything they want, any time they want. Freedom of speech is a right and a privilege. It does not give you license to intrude on the rights of others or hurt and mock them.

    I was at Mass at St. Barbara's yesterday morning and Father Sterling mentioned that there have been some break-ins in the Independence/Erlanger area. Please be alert for strangers in the area and remember to lock your doors.

    It's all about baseball this weekend in Cincy as the Reds team up with Major League Baseball to host the 2009 Civil Rights Game. Bill Cosby, Mohammed Ali and Hank Aaron will be honored at the Beacon Luncheon on Saturday that is part of the festivities and it is even rumored that President Obama may pay a visit as well.

    Mr. Timothy Hollenkamp has submitted a letter resigning his Council seat, effective April 20, 2009. The Fort Mitchell City Council has set a deadline for those interested in filling the vacancy to submit resumes or letters of interest to the City Clerk by no later than Monday, May 4, 2009. A special meeting will be held at the Fort Mitchell City Building on Monday, May 11, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. to fill the vacancy.
