The Thomas More College men's tennis team won its first match of the season today (Sunday, April 15, 2012) as it defeated Thiel College, 5-4, in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania.
With the win, the Saints improve to 1-8 overall and 1-5 in the PAC. With the loss, the Tomcats fall to 5-12 overall and 2-5 in the PAC.
The Saints had three wins in singles play as senior Andrew Hetzer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder) won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1, freshman Eric Thompson (Edgewood, Ky./Dixie Heights) won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 and senior Ricky Barria (Erlanger, Ky./Dixie Heights) won 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4.
In doubles action, the No. 1 tandem of Hetzer and Thompson won 8-4 and the No. 3 tandem of freshman Andrew Mason (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) and freshman Michael Stephens (Fort Thomas, Ky./Covington Latin) won 8-5.
Thomas More returns to action this afternoon when it plays host Westminster College at 1 p.m. in New Wilmington.
