Students from Sunny Ridge, Owyhee, Iowa, Sherman, and Lake Ridge Elementary Schools gathered October 16, at South Middle School for the second of two Fifth Grade Volleyball Jamborees.
For four weeks, fifth graders stayed after school and were taught the basic fundamental rules of volleyball. Line-ups from each school divided their players into teams of six kids, alternating boy-girl, rotating at serving position. Each child was limited to a maximum of three serves in a row, with the team rotating after the third successful serve. This made sure that each child got a chance to serve the ball, and each child got to play in all positions on the court. Teams from all schools alternated playing in ten minute games.
There was an electricity in the air as the teams gathered in groups, high fived each other and chanted cheers while their teammates played. All students exhibited terrific sportsmanship as they congratulated their opponents after every game.
"It was a fun learning experience," said one fifth grader from Lake Ridge Elementary. She also added that she was excited to try out for volleyball when she got into middle school.
