“ Iron Chef ” Culinary Competition

A Health & Wellness “Heart Healthy” Event

By Kimberly Dixson , Lithonia Local Editor,

On Saturday, March 26, 2011 , DeKalb County Council of PTAs, again partnered with the DeKalb County School System and Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts Atlanta - located on Lakeside Parkway in Tucker, GA – to host its 6th Annual “Iron Chef” Culinary Competition.

This is one of our top health and wellness initiatives geared toward promoting healthy lifestyles, enhancement of the skills of our high school students in the field of culinary arts and promoting culinary as a possible career choice.

Obesity is the number one health issue affecting our children here in the state of Georgia ; this initiative encourages and educates students and attendees on how culinary style meals can actually be easy and healthy through proper preparation and cooking techniques.

Hats off to Health! The prestigious Le Cordon Bleu is a traditional culinary school, which teaches students classic techniques and culture of traditional global cuisines, as well as train generations of accomplished chefs.

Collaborating with Le Cordon Bleu always provides an elegant and exciting atmosphere for our students, instructors and guests.

While their entrees were being judged by six high profile Culinary Judges, students treated guests to samples of their incredible culinary creations! The following schools participated in the competition: Arabia Mountain HS, Columbia HS, Lakeside HS, McNair HS, Redan HS, Southwest DeKalb HS, Towers HS and Warren Technical HS.

Mrs. Deirdre Pierce, DeKalb County Council of PTAs Health and Wellness Chair, annually coordinates this event.

Some of our ever-supportive and notable attendees were School Board member, Dr. Pamela Speaks; Interim-Superintendent, Mrs. Ramona Tyson and Dr. Delmas Watkins, Director of the Career and Technical Education department .

As always, our event will appear on Comcast PDS -24 in the future. The Champion community newspaper representative interviewed our students and guests and plans to publish an article to showcase the event.   Heartfelt thanks to both of them for their annual support!

Everyone’s a Winner! You’re probably wondering since this is a competition, who was the winner, right?   Well in this event, all participants and their instructors are winners and receive medallions and a trophy for their school; however, Redan HS placed First, Towers HS placed Second and Arabia Mountain HS placed Third.   Our remaining Teams received Outstanding Participation trophies.   All Teams will be introduced and recognized at the May Board of Education meeting.
