OurTown.com Student-Athlete of the Month: Alantae Crawford 1/29/2010 12:56:33 PM

LAFAYETTE – Alantae Crawford, McCutcheon High School’s leading scorer and one of the team’s senior leaders, is OurTown.com’s Student-Athlete of the Month for February.

Crawford, son of Tanika Phinisee, is the Mavericks leader in points (18.8), rebounds (5.2), and assists (2.0).   McCutcheon is 5-8 going into the heart of its Hoosier Crossroads schedule. Blessed with impressive jumping ability and shooting touch, Crawford is considered one of the top high school players in the Greater Lafayette area.

Along with basketball, Crawford is a member of the McCutcheon track team and reached the Indiana state track and field meet in the high jump last year.

“I really owe a lot of my scoring to my teammates,” Crawford said. “Teamwise, since I’ve been on varsity, we haven’t won a sectional and I would like to do that this year.   In track, I would like to get back to state in the high jump. “

Crawford said he has received college letters from Wabash, Bethel, and Huntington for basketball and Indiana State and University of Detroit Mercy for track.

McCutcheon principal John Beeker, who nominated Crawford for the recognition, said Crawford is a role model on and off the court.

“He is a true success story,” Beeker said. “Everyone likes him, it doesn’t matter if you’re an athlete or not. He is very loyal to his teammates, coaches, and the school. He really deserves this honor.”
