BLOOMINGTON -- Cultural centers at Indiana University have joined efforts to create a brown bag discussion series this fall, "Choice of Colors," which will address issues of diversity, identity and cultural awareness.
On Wednesday, Sept. 30, Indiana University Northwest will host a rhythmic diversity event that challenges participants to examine life in a profoundly new and interesting way. D-Village is a two-hour experiential program that incorporates the rich metaphors of the drum circle into a hands-on experience that leads to a powerful, enlivening and non-threatening examination of diversity issues.
INDIANAPOLIS Ivy Tech Community College has announced plans to partner with I.T. Business Corporation to expand the colleges purchases and contracts with Indiana-owned women and minority-owned businesses. I.T. Business Corporation, along with Pro7interactive, have created a searchable database called Pronicity, allowing the college to search for available women and/or minority owned businesses within their service area to purchase products or create business partnerships.
LAFAYETTE -- The Jahari Dance Troupe is dance at its best. The troupe's movements range from early African-American experiences to today's hip-hop. Jahari will be joined by the Haraka Writers also from the Black Cultural Center on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 3 p.m. at the downtown library, 627 South St.
LAFAYETTE -- The Diversity Roundtable will conduct a news conference to announce the results of a Diversity Climate Survey measuring attitudes of the community over the last decade at 10 a.m., Monday, Jan. 18, at the Tippecanoe County Public Library, 627 South St.
WEST LAFAYETTE -- The West Lafayette Police Merit Commission at their regular monthly meeting promoted Sgt. David VanVactor to the rank of lieutenant, effective immediately. Lt. VanVactor is the lone African-American officer on the West Lafayette Police Department.
LAFAYETTE On Friday, January 15 from noon to 1 p.m. Ivy Tech will be hosting a Community Peace Program celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. The program will feature a keynote address by motivational speaker Travis Brown, music from the Tecumseh Singers of Lafayette, special recognition of the Essay Contest winners, and a winter clothing donation presentation.
LAFAYETTE -- In celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month 2010 and to generate funding for materials and sources for Asian American Studies collections at the Purdue University and Indiana University libraries, Kate Agathon, the Council on Asian American Studies, the Tippecanoe Arts Federation, and the Asian American Network of Indiana (AANI) are sponsoring a fundraising installation/exhibition of donated art addressing identity and experience within contemporary Asian Pacific America.
LAFAYETTE Tippecanoe County commissioners appointed two Purdue University professional staff members to the countys human relations commission this week. Garet Turner and Kinnari Sijpal filled two open spots on the commission.
LAFAYETTE -- The Diversity Round Table of Greater Lafayette will host a community forum with local police chiefs at Ivy Tech Community College, 3101 Creasy Lane, at 7 p.m. on Jan. 12.
The event will be held in Lilly Rooms 1112, 1114, and 1120 in Ivy Hall. WBAA 920 AM will broadcast the event live.
WEST LAFAYETTE - Kevin Brooks might be a full semester away from graduating as an educator from Purdue, but his passion for mentoring has already touched young lives in the Greater Lafayette community. Brooks, a 37-year-old doctoral student in Purdue's College of Education, co-founded the student organization Builders of a New Generation, which mentors African-American children and teens in the Greater Lafayette area.
