The Native American Educational and Cultural Center at Purdue University has appointed Felica Ahasteen-Bryant its new director. Ahasteen-Bryant is from the Dine' Nation and was born and raised on the Navajo reservation in New Mexico.
A Purdue University researcher has been named a recipient of a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor given by the U.S. government to young researchers. Monica Cox, an assistant professor of engineering education, will receive the award from President Barack Obama during a fall ceremony at the White House.
The Latino Cultural Center is sponsoring its third annual Latino Graduation Ceremony on May 15 at the Purdue Memorial Union. The ceremony is scheduled for 4-6 p.m. in Room 118. During the event, the Purdue Latino Alumni Organization also will present its Outstanding Senior Award.
The chief executive officer of the oldest civil
right organization in the country, a nationally known author on
African-American studies and a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet highlight
the spring Black Cultural Center Arts Series programs. The center's events also will include various
programs focusing on African-American roots in popular music, a
portrait exhibit, performances by the center's performing arts
ensembles and a tour to Cleveland.
Three films examining undocumented immigrants'
lives in the United States and their homelands will be shown as part of
a film series beginning Jan. 27 at Purdue University. The films, sponsored by the Latino Cultural
Center, will be shown at 6 p.m. in the Neil Armstrong Hall of
Engineering, Room 1010, and are free and open to the public.
Four performing arts ensembles from Purdue University's Black Cultural Center on Dec. 5 will dramatize what they learned during a study of New Orleans' African-American art and culture after Hurricane Katrina. The Cultural Arts Festival " is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Loeb Playhouse.
Purdue University's Latino Cultural Center will celebrate the Mexican
and historical indigenous Aztec holiday Da de los Muertos, or Day of
the Dead, with crafts, music and food from 4-7 p.m. Oct. 31 at Ivy Tech
Community College, 3101 S. Creasy Lane.
Purdue University Galleries is presenting a comprehensive exhibition of
contemporary Latino art that examines issues of immigration. "Humanigration: The Crdenas Latino
Collection," will be presented Oct. 27 to Dec. 7.
Itanza Wright, a freshman majoring in aeronautical and astronautic engineering, is years winner of the Helen Bass Williams Scholarship. The Helen Bass Williams Scholarship is awarded to a student entering his/her freshman year at Purdues West Lafayette campus.
