LAFAYETTE – A.J. Knight is looking to come to a radio or iPod near you.
The Purdue University film major, who is planning on graduating in December, is one of the featured DJ at WAZY-FM, 3824 18th St., and a self-professed sports nut. He's on the air from 7 p.m. to midnight Monday through Friday and noon to 6 p.m. Saturday.
That's why his high school sports updates on Friday nights at WAZY and working with the upcoming Purdue Boilermakers pregame shows this fall are right up his alley.
"I want to make myself more visible in the community," Knight said in an interview with OurTown.com. "I think Friday nights get more popular each year and it helps that Central Catholic (four-time Class A state champions) keep winning."
Knight, a 2007 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School, first interned at WAZY-FM and Artistic Media Partners in the fall of 2008 and has worked part-time at the station since 2009. He said he enjoyed working as the board operator for Purdue sporting events.
WAZY (96.5) and sister stations WBPE-FM (Bob FM, 95.3), WSHP-FM (The Rocket, 95.7) and WSHY-AM (1410), cover a full range of Purdue sports, from football, men and women basketball, baseball, softball and soccer.
Knight said, though, he hopes to get out more to meet and engage high school coaches and players in hopes to bring their sports to the radio station.
Knight, who also does the sports podcasts "Three Sports Guns" and "The Triple Option," said he hopes listeners will find his Friday night show full of information on their local teams as well a great music and a fun atmosphere.
