LAFAYETTE – McCutcheon had its hands full trying to stop the powerful running game of the Fishers Tigers on Friday, Sept. 21 in a 34-6 loss at the Mavericks’ Ellison Field.
In the first quarter, the Mavericks gave up a touchdown for 70 yards plus 37 rushing yards on the ground to Harvey Allen (13-62, one touchdown for the game). The Mavericks were unable to answer the TD before the second quarter.
During the second quarter, McCutcheon wasn’t able to score as senior quarterback Matt Marencik (8-14, 40 yards) gained 11 yards and ended the first half completing three of seven passes. McCutcheon back Nate Deno (13-77, one touchdown) had five rushing attempts for 22 yards by halftime. The Mavs’ Caleb Harper had a big sack for a loss of six yards against the Tigers.
The Tigers, though, were able to put 10 points to the board with a field goal and a rushing touchdown by Maurice Campbell (six attempts for 71 yards and one touchdown), who accumulated 45 yards in the first half.
McCutcheon came out after halftime looking to score its first touchdown of the night. Deno answered the call, scoring on a 29-yard rushing touchdown bringing the score to Mavericks, cutting Fishers lead to 24-6.
The Tigers scored once again with a 74-yard kickoff return, giving the Tigers a 31-6 lead.
The fourth quarter consisted of only one drive for Fishers ending in a field goal. While the Mavericks played some of their best defense of the night it was not enough to come back from the large deficit they held throughout the game.
