LAFAYETTE – Christopher Kowel, a political communications professor at Purdue University, will speak at the SLN meeting Tuesday, June 19, from 8–9:30 a.m., at BASi (Bioanalytical Systems Inc), Faraday Room.

Kowel teaches courses in sales management, customer service and nonverbal persuasion. Kowel’s research focus is in nonverbal communication, specifically the persuasion of emotion, exploring the process of charisma and credibility. Additional focus areas include sales, social perception, and non-verbal/emotional persuasion.
Prior to entering the academic world, Kowel was the principal of CS Strategies, a political and marketing consultation firm that focused on the elections of local, state and federal officials and ballot issues in Michigan. He also worked for five years as a top producing real estate agent in the Detroit market during a challenging economy.
Kowel earned his bachelor’s degree in communication and political science from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan; a master’s degree from the University of Connecticut, and doctorate from University of Connecticut in communication and marketing, with a focus on the communication of emotions within persuasion.
