United Way closes in on 2012 fall goal

From Lafayette/ West Lafayette, Indiana

LAFAYETTE -- United Way of Greater Lafayette's Campaign leadership announced a total of $3,460,029, or 72.8 percent of the $4.75 million campaign goal, has been raised to date during the fourth and final report meeting hosted by Lafayette Adult Resource Academy.

“With just three weeks left in the Campaign, there is much to be done,” said Bill Olds, 2012 Campaign chair and president of Lafayette Life Insurance Foundation. “Many companies are still running their employee campaigns, and many individual donors have yet to make their pledges this year. The United Way staff and campaign volunteers are calling on our past supporters, but we need everyone's help to reach the goal.”

The United Way of Greater Lafayette funds organizations that provide basic needs while promoting financial stability and independence. Lafayette Adult Resource Academy (LARA) provides adult education programs that offer literacy and life skills training including ESL and GED preparation.

Last year, 76 percent of adult learners at LARA who were seeking high school diplomas passed the GED test. This is significant because adults who earn GEDs take home an average of $3,500 more in annual income, have better health insurance and have higher levels of political and social participation than adults who do not complete high school or the equivalent.

United Way of Greater Lafayette promotes financial stability via the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. This year, United Way's VITA program brought $350,000 in tax return dollars back to families in Tippecanoe County.

This money is crucial to increasing the incomes of recipients. Forty-nine percent of refund recipients indicated they would use the money to pay bills and 26 percent indicated they would use the money for rent, home repair or mortgage payments.

Olds asked Division Chairs to report their successes. Highlights this week included:
