LAFAYETTE – The world will once again come to Lafayette for the annual Colt World Series at Loeb Stadium at Columbian Park Aug. 6-11.
Teams from Europe, Mexico and Puerto Rico will battle other 15-16 year-old baseball players from around the country, including one team from host Lafayette. Last year, a team from Gurabo, Puerto Rico, won the title, beating a squad from Greensboro, N.C.
The eight teams are broken down into two divisions and play a round robin tournament with the top two teams from each division playing in the semifinals on Wednesday, Aug. 10 with the championship game being played at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11.
Teams get a local flair for Lafayette, Indiana as players and coaches stay with “host families.” This allows traveling teams to cut down on expenses and have an authentic Midwestern experience while in town.
Teams are still participating in regional tournaments, some up to the weekend before the Colt World Series so all the slots are not filled yet for the tournament. According to the Colt World Series website, Mexico will be represented by a team out of Mazatlan, Sinalon. Puerto Rico’s representative will be from Levittown.
The Lafayette All-Stars, made up of some of the best from the Greater Lafayette area, will be the host team. Another local team, Hoosier North, is trying to play its way into the tournament through the North Zone. Hoosier North did just that last year and managed to reach the CWS semifinals.
The Red Division will be made up of the Lafayette All-Stars, Mazatlan, East and South zone representatives. The White Division will be made up of Levittown, North and West Zone teams and the entry from Europe.
