Kathryn Weil Center announces August programming

LAFAYETTE – St. Elizabeth’s Kathryn Weil Center for Education has announced its August community programs. These programs will be held at the Weil Center, in the Medical Arts Building, 415 N. 26th St., Suite 400, unless otherwise noted.

Greater Lafayette Breast Feeding Coalition and St. Elizabeth Regional Health sponsoring breastfeeding symposium
The Greater Lafayette Breast Feeding Coalition and St. Elizabeth Regional Health will host “Medication and Mothers’ Milk: A breastfeeding symposium with Dr. Thomas W. Hale” from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 19 at the Kathryn Weil Center for Education.


Thomas W. Hale, R.Ph., Ph.D., is a professor of pediatrics and assistant dean of research at Texas Tech University’s School of Medicine. He holds degrees in pharmacy and a Ph.D. in pharmacology and toxicology and is widely experienced in pediatric and breastfeeding clinical pharmacology.


He is a well-known international lecturer in the pharmacology of lactation and is the author of five books including Medications and Mothers’ Milk, the top-selling drug reference manual in the world. His other books include Textbook of Human Lactation, Clinical Therapy in Breastfeeding Women and Drug Therapy and Breastfeeding. He is considered by many to be one of the world’s leading authorities in the use of medications in breastfeeding women.


Hale will present the following sessions during the symposium: “The Control and Production of Human Milk;” “Using Medications in Breastfeeding Mothers;” “Using Antidepressants in Breastfeeding Mothers;” and “Candida Infections. All the Details.”


Registration for only the symposium is $45. An option for registration and the book, Medications and Mothers’ Milk, is available for $80. Additional books are $35 each. Dr. Hale will be available during breaks to sign books.

New Moms Tea August programs scheduled
The Kathryn Weil Center for Education and the Spirit of Women continue to offer new and expecting moms an opportunity to learn in a relaxed environment.


The New Moms Tea meets weekly at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays at the Kathryn Weil Center for Education, located inside the Medical Arts Building at 415 N. 26th St., Suite 400 in Lafayette.


Upcoming topics and speakers for this series include:


• Aug. 3: “Identifying Illness in the Newborn and When to Call Your Doctor” by Pam Smith, R.N., BSN, operations manager, St. Elizabeth Women’s Center.
• Aug. 10: “Pretty as a Picture: Preserving Memories with Photos” by Annette Bahler, photographer and owner of Photography by De Lisa.


Following each educational program, moms will have an opportunity to discuss breastfeeding concerns with a certified lactation counselor from St. Elizabeth Regional Health.


The Kathryn Weil Center for Education and St. Elizabeth Regional Health are members of the Spirit of Women, a national coalition of hospitals and health care providers that pledge to provide the highest standards of excellence in women’s health, education and community outreach.

Neonatal resuscitation recertification course offered by Kathryn Weil Center for Education
The Kathryn Weil Center for Education will provide neonatal resuscitation certification and recertification programs in 2010. This course is designed to teach an evidence-based approach to newborn resuscitation.


A recertification class will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 4 at the Kathryn Weil Center for Education. Cost is $75 per person, and class size is limited.

Cholesterol screenings scheduled at Kathryn Weil Center for Education
The Kathryn Weil Center for Education will offer cholesterol screenings by appointment on Thursday, Aug. 12 at the center. The price is $30 and registration is required. The screening includes checking total cholesterol, HDL, total cholesterol/HDL ratio, triglycerides, LDL and glucose levels. Fasting is recommended as it provides more accurate results, but not required. You are encouraged to drink water prior to your test; black coffee and black tea are also acceptable. A staff member will discuss your individual results.

Kathryn Weil Center for Education schedules basic tuberculosis course
The Kathryn Weil Center for Education will offer a basic tuberculosis course from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 12. Cost for this program is $60, which is non-refundable.


This course teaches participants how to identify populations to be tested and how to administer, read and record the Mantoux Skin Test.

‘Motion for Moms’ starts Aug. 24; ‘Motion for Moms Boot Camp’ set for Aug. 25
The August session of “Motion for Moms” will start at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 24.

Motion for Moms is a light exercise and fitness program for expecting moms, as well as for moms who have recently delivered and is sponsored by St. Elizabeth Regional Health’s Physical Therapy Department.


This session of Motion for Moms is set for 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning on Tuesday, Aug. 24 and going through Thursday, Sept. 30. Cost is $40 for the 12 sessions. Medical clearance from your doctor is required prior to participation, unless more than 12 weeks postpartum. A release form can be obtained by calling the Kathryn Weil Center for Education at (765) 449-5133.


Motion for Moms includes traditional strengthening, stretching, endurance activities including yoga and Pilates, as well as resistive exercises to prepare the new mom for her childbirth experience and for caring for her newborn. An educational component will be a part of each section. Topics that will be covered will include nutrition, pain management during pregnancy, postpartum recovery, relaxation techniques, posture, foot care and safety information.


Motion for Moms will also offer a “Boot Camp” option, which is a more intense and high-impact workout session for postpartum moms. The Boot Camp will meet from 5 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays, starting on Wednesday, Aug. 25 and going through Wednesday, Sept. 29. The cost for Boot Camp is $20 for six sessions.

Kathryn Weil Center for Education offers tuberculosis instructor course
The Kathryn Weil Center for Education will offer a tuberculosis instructor course. The course is held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 20. Cost for this program is $125, which is non-refundable.


This course provides participants the principles of various teaching methods and the opportunity to demonstrate one’s ability to teach the Basic Tuberculosis Course. Participants must be a health care professional who is responsible for tuberculosis education and who holds a four-year degree in a health-related field or a current Indiana professional license. Participants must also have taken the Basic Tuberculosis and Skin Test course within three years and not less than six months of applying for the instructor course.

Kathryn Weil Center for Education offering community safety and parent education classes
The Kathryn Weil Center for Education is offering community safety and parent education classes in August. Courses include:


• Expectant parent education classes (in classrooms or online);
• Public CPR;
• CPR/AED (automated external defibrillator);
• First aid classes; and
• Tours of the new Women’s Center at St. Elizabeth East.
