LAFAYETTE -- Greater Lafayette will take on the world once again at the Colt World Series at Columbian Park's Loeb Stadium Aug. 5-12.
The best 15-16-year-old baseball players in the area and region will face teams from around the country, Puerto Rico, Mexico and Europe in the tournament that is the highlight of Greater Lafayette's youth baseball season. Last year a team from McAllen, Texas won the championship.
The fun starts Tuesday, Aug. 4 with a pre-tournament extravaganza at Loeb Stadium, which will include a home run derby and fastest runner contest. If rain comes, the extravaganza will be held at the Jefferson High School cafeteria. The event was rained out last year.
The Lafayette All-Star, a team made up of players from the local high schools, is the host team. Hoosier North, a team made of local and regional athletes, is the host area team. They will be joined by eight other teams from around the country and previously mentioned Puerto Rico, Mexico and a representative from Europe.
The 10 teams will be broken down into the Red Division, where the Lafayette All-Stars will play, and the White Division, where Hoosier North will play.
Pool play will run from Aug. 5-10. On Aug. 5-7, games will be played at 2:30 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Lafayette will play in the 7:30 p.m. games on Aug. 5 and 7 while Hoosier North will play in the 7:30 p.m. game on Aug. 6.
On Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 8-9, the games will begin at noon, 2:30 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, Hoosier North will play in the 5 p.m. game and Lafayette will play in the 7:30 p.m. game. Lafayette will also play in the 7:30 p.m. game on Sunday.
Hoosier North will play in the final pool game on Monday, Aug. 10 at 7:30 p.m. On Tuesday, Aug. 10, the Red Division champion will play the White Division runner-up at 5 p.m. and the White Division champion will play the Red Division runner-up at 7 p.m.
The Colt World Series championship game will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12.
