POSTED: Thursday, February 26, 2009 LAFAYETTE -- The 19th Annual Lafayette Area Sportsmedicine Symposium, sponsored by Lafayette Orthopaedic Clinic and Lafayette Rehabilitation Services, was held on February 23 at University Plaza Hotel in West Lafayette. A record high of 140 people which included middle and high school coaches, athletic trainers, school nurses, physicians and other professionals who work with adolescent athletes attended the event. LOC physicians Drs. Robert Hagen, Michael Krauss, Michael Highhouse, John Bauman, and Daniel Daluga spoke on various topics including Concussion Management, Stress Fractures, Apophysitis, Shoulder Multi-Directional Instability and Labrum Tear Injuries. Sarah Reimer, LRS Athletic Trainer, gave a presentation on Stretching Techniques...Role in Prevention of Injuries. Special guest speakers Wade Russell, Strength Coach at Lafayette Jefferson High School, spoke on Off Season Training and Gail Newton, Pharmacy Professor at Purdue University, gave a town hall meeting style presentation on Over the Counter Drugs. The symposium concluded with keynote speaker Danny Hope, Purdue University Head Football Coach. Coach Hope gave an inspiring talk on "Motivating Athletes to Make Good Decisions 24 / 7...Avoiding the dreaded phone call."
