SHOPPING WITH GABBY
  1. ADD SOME COOL ACCESSORIES!Wed, 17 Jun 2015 11:30:22 EST
In last week's column I told you that I was getting ready for a Mediterranean cruise this summer, and I got started on my shopping for the trip. I'm trying to get a lot of outfits into a minimum of luggage; since I will be forced to drag all my stuff around myself (I'm going with girlfriends). To that end, I am trying to concentrate on a few main colors (black, white, blue and khaki) for bottoms, with colorful tops, and several hot looking dresses for special evenings. I've been shopping for some accessories to round out my wardrobe, starting with shoes, of course. More...

  2. CRUISE INTO FASHION!Thu, 11 Jun 2015 11:32:34 EST
Girls, I'm preparing for a cruise vacation to the Mediterranean with Celebrity cruises this summer, and I can't wait! When shopping for the perfect wardrobe to take, however, I find I want to buy one of everything I see. If I took all the stuff I want to take, I'd need four trunks and two muscle-bound hunks to carry them (which is not a bad idea, but I don't see it happening.) Since I'm going with girlfriends, I don't think I can count on perfect strangers to pick up the slack, so I'm gong to have to find a way to economize on my packing. I'll be away for two weeks, so there are certain things that must go with me, but I'm going to try to start with some basics and pick up accessories so that I can wear the same thing several times, achieving some different looks. 3. ARE HANDBAGS HABIT-FORMING?Thu, 04 Jun 2015 11:22:53 EST
As you all probably know by now, one of my many weaknesses is handbags. I love them! Over the years, I've been able to build up quite a collection, so now it's generally the pretty colors and unique designs that attract me the most. If you're just starting to explore the world of beautiful designer bags, however, you'll probably want to start with something basic, like a brown or black bag. Those you can wear just about all year around, with most outfits. Once you get those basics down, the selection is amazing! More...

  4. NEED CLOTHES FOR A NEW JOB?Thu, 28 May 2015 11:27:55 EST
Congratulations to those of you graduating from high school and college this year! What a great accomplishment! This marks a turning point in your lives, whether you're going to continue your education or are about to embark on a new career, and your lives will never be the same. Nearly everyone, at this time in their lives, needs the same thing. A JOB! You may be starting off on a new full-time profession, or continuing your part-time employment to supplement income while funding your education, but you still probably need to work. This means you'll be going out on interviews, networking at social functions, and, hopefully, working at something you like doing. More...

  5. SWIM COVERUPS AND MORE!Thu, 21 May 2015 11:13:09 EST
Last time we talked about bathing suits, and found a great selection in a variety of price ranges, styles and colors. But, of course, the swimsuit is just the beginning. A cute cover-up or two is a necessity, especially if youre traveling or spend a lot of time in a resort-type setting or a community pool. If the backyard pool is your favorite summertime destination, you probably want to take it up a notch when youre entertaining friends and family. More...

  6. HOW ABOUT A NEW BATHING SUIT?Thu, 14 May 2015 09:33:47 EST
A peek at the calendar tells me it's less than two weeks to Memorial Day and the beginning of bathing suit season! That may be hard to believe if you don't live in some warm weather climate like Florida or Southern California, but, alas, it is a fact. I find that I haven't even been thinking about sunbathing, much less swimming, as we'll be lucky if it tops out at 70 degrees today in my neck of the woods. But, who knows? One thing you can count on in the Midwest: if you dont like the weather today, wait until tomorrow and it can change drastically. Just last week, it was pushing 90, and we were in shorts and halter tops, and today we're experiencing a gorgeous spring day when a sweater or jacket is a welcome addition to any outfit. More...

  7. ARE YOU BLUE (CLOTHES, I MEAN)?Thu, 07 May 2015 11:31:32 EST
One of the most universally flattering colors to wear is blue, and, I might add, it also has a calming effect on you and those around you, so it's a great choice for an interview, a public appearance, or just having a fantastic time with friends and family. I am also a big fan because there are some many choices within the blue spectrum. Just think, there's baby blue, aqua, turquoise, navy, sapphire, royal and literally tons of other options. And it looks good with so many color combinations, you can literally add a shade of blue to almost any other color for a new and exciting look. Navy, of course, is a great basic, but add a touch of yellow, orange or red for something really eye-popping. And there's nothing more summery than white with vibrant aqua, or demure baby blue. A deep, delicious royal blue is one of my favorites. Always rich-looking and the perfect complement to basic black, white, or on its' own. More...

  8. CASUAL PANTS COME IN ALL LENGTHS!Thu, 30 Apr 2015 15:34:48 EST
It seems to me it used to be a lot easier to dress casually. You'd put on a pair of jeans or maybe a pair of shorts in summer, add a tee shirt, and you were done. Now, you have to decide if it's around-the-house casual, running errands, meeting friends, or one of a million other things. Everything's casual today, except for work (sometimes) or for occasions that are almost formal. Nobody dresses up, but, of course, everyone wants to look good, so we need a broad variety of casual clothes. I'm not even going to go into casual dresses or skirts today, because just the broad selection of pants styles is enough for this discussion. More...

  9. GRAB A NEW PAIR OF SANDALS!Thu, 23 Apr 2015 14:14:04 EST
I don't know about you, but as soon as the weather starts to turn nice, my thoughts turn to, what else? Sandals! Even though I love my boots and booties, after trudging through snow and ice and sleety rain for six months or more, I'm more than ready for my sandals. The dress styles are gorgeous and sexy, the casual styles are fun and flirty. And they all give me that feeling of freedom, which I long for. More...

  10. PROM TIME AGAIN!Wed, 15 Apr 2015 14:28:34 EST
I can't believe it's prom time again! I have to admit, since I'm a little past prom age now, I tend to forget the thrill of shopping for the Big Night until one of my younger cousins or a neighbor's girls start telling me about their plans and their quest for the perfect dress. I do, however, adore shopping for formal and semi-formal clothes (I love to dress up) even though my dressy occasions are spread through the year. Consequently, I don't usually experience the urgency of finding THE ONE gown during those hectic weeks when prom is the most important thing in life. Looking for fancy dress is fun for me though, because when I do look through the stores and websites at this time of year, I often find something so fantastic that I get it and save it for my next formal wedding, charity event, or cocktail party.
