Or so I had been told. However, after three weeks in Cincinnati, I hadn't seen anything that struck me as particularly German, other than street names. Sure, many German immigrants settled in Cincinnati about 200 years ago, but what did they leave the city? What is so German about Cincinnati? Since I couldn't find an answer to these questions myself, I decided to do the next best thing: I asked people in Cincinnati what they thought was German about their city. This is what they told me:

SMOKE RINGS 5-19

By Andy Furman...I am often amazed with my brothers and sisters in the local sports media. How can you ride that roller coaster each day? How can you go up and down with every win or loss by the Cincinnati Reds? Hey, you're not foolin us, really you're not. And honestly, you can't be that jacked up in mid-May for the Reds can you? That's why I chose to occupy this space. I mean there's more to sports and life- than a baseball teams win or loss in the middle of May. Take this for instance. Former NFL lineman Ray Edwards is 4-0 in his professional boxing career. Edwards, who spent seven seasons in the NFL playing defensive tackle with the Minnesota Vikings and the Atlanta Falcons, now makes his living squaring off against huge men intent on punching him in the head as frequently as possible. But get this.

CAROUSEL AT SMALE RIVERFRONT PARK

From nature preserves and parkways, to regional and neighborhood parks, Cincinnati has a long and proud history of enhancing the quality of life through outdoor recreation. WHAT FUN!

I just got back from a week in Florida, and had an absolutely wonderful time there. My two girlfriends, Shannon and Raqui, and I spent quite a bit of time shopping at the fabulous malls and boutiques there, as we're all really into fashion and clothes, like most girls. We knew, of course, that the lifestyle is much more casual down in the Sunshine State, but were somewhat surprised to see that there seemed to be little call for dressing up, at least in the areas we visited. Everyone was in shorts, capris or ankle pants, or perhaps shift dresses, or casual maxi dresses. They even shopped in bathing suits with cute cover-ups and flip-flops. When we were shopping, we noticed, too, that people seemed to be skipping the clothing departments, and gravitating toward the shoe, handbag and accessory areas.

CHILIMOBILE AT THE LIBRARY

The Public Library and Gold Star Chili want to reward you for participating in Summer Reading! What did she think?"It is flashy, it is glamorous, and it is Cincinnati's latest attraction: the Horseshoe Casino. To be honest, I don't like casinos. I usually try to stay as far away from them as possible. Don't get me wrong I am a passionate player; cards, roulette, Scrabble you name it, I play it! As long as there is no money involved, I do great. But this changes as soon as I start to play for money; my luck packs its bags, takes a plane and flies far, far away.

AMNESTY DAY AT THE CINCINNATI PUBLIC LIBRARY

On May 8 the Public Library received a National Medal for Library Service from the Institute for Museum and Library Service. Well the construction is almost complete and Saturday I got to take a close up look during the Cavalcade of Homes. It did not disappoint. Builder Tim Burks and interior designer, Grace Jones did an unbelievable job. The home is huge, over 15,000 square feet, but it is a home. It is light, airy, and beautifully functional. The crystal chandeliers are beautiful. The finishes are gorgeous, right down to the crystal embellished door and drawer pulls. The pool and patio are amazing, even now when the pool house is not quite finished. There is a lake in the front of the house with what looks like a moat, giving it a truly castle-like feel. Chateau Mon Reve is truly fit for a king.

UC SPORTS COMMUNICATIONS OFFICE HONORED

The University of Cincinnati sports communications office was one of 11 honored nationally by the Football Writers Association of America with the naming of the Super 11 for excellence in sports information during the 2012 season. If you buy a top to go with a specific pair of pants or skirt, the bottom portion of the outfit gets a tear, or you spill something on it, or you get a grass stain. Maybe the pants style goes from wide legs to skinnies, or the skirt from maxi to mini, the in color changes, or (worse yet), those short shorts you bought last year no longer cover enough to make them even marginally decent. Or the reverse happens, and your top gets ragged or stained. Either way, you end up with a slew of mismatched tops and bottoms that take up valuable space in your closet or bureau, but don't add up to even a few great outfits. These pieces get relegated to "round the house" or maybe "washing the car" wear.

MARIEMONT LIBRARY EARTH DAY PLANT SWAP

Green thumbs and beginning gardeners alike are invited to bring plant cuttings and divisions to share with fellow gardeners at the Mariemont Branch Library Saturday, April 20, from 11 a.m. to noon, rain or shine, for an Earth Day plant swap. While you're at the library, be sure to check out its collection of books on topics such as annuals, perennials, heirloom vegetables, and landscaping.

BEARCATS TO HOST INAUGURAL LACROSSE BBQ BASH

The University of Cincinnatis womens lacrosse team, in conjunction with UCATS, is hosting its inaugural BBQ Bash on Friday, April 26, 2013. A local designer and entrepreneur, Mary Helen Boeddeker, is bringing back that look. Mary Helen wants to bring youthfulness and joy back to childrens clothing. Mary Helen has formed a company called Mary Helen Clothing. Her main focus is designing clothing for young girls, but she has a few items for young boys and is slowly branching out into womens clothing. Mary Helen is a 2012 graduate of DAAP. While attending school she interned at Abercrombie, Carters and Justice so she learned a lot about the childrens clothing industry. Mary Helen has been sewing since she was 8 years old. She comes from a family of clothing designers. Two of her aunts are in the design business. One attended DAAP and the other is a graduate of Parsons. The defense won the day. We looked a little ragged on offense with way too many penalties. We have lots of room for improvement but if we continue to get this type of effort, we will have a chance. Our guys were energized and this is a beautiful facility. The Bengals were gracious enough to let us come down here today and we appreciate that.

COACH SCHNEIR RETIRES FROM UC

It was the end of an era Saturday at University of Cincinnatis Gettler Stadium as Bill Schnier coached his final home meet at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational. That might seem a natural conclusion - but playing basketball is a lot more than being tall. For me - basketball is learning how to take what I bring to the court - and - "team up" with the other guys - my teammates - to play the best that we can. Except in Cincinnati. Maybe thats what makes our town special. Especially on Opening Day. The Reds roll out their season, Monday, April 1st against an American League opponent for the very first time the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Doesnt matter a lick. They could be playing the Bad News Bears, tickets in Cincinnati for Opening Day will always be at a premium. The tradition, the love affair between a city and its baseball team, and of course the passion of the area fans is no better than in Cincinnati. The birth place of major league baseball always puts it best foot forward on Opening Day. And its a shame one of the long lasting traditions of the game has gone by the boards. That of Cincinnati opening their season prior to every other ball club.

EASTER EGG ROLL AT WASHINGTON PARK

Saturday is supposed to be a beautiful day. It has great religious significance, which I appreciate, of course, but it also opens the door to the Spring season. It makes me hopeful; spiritually, physically and mentally. If it's a gorgeous, sunny day (we can hope), or a dreary, chilly one, I still venture out in the morning to join the throng at services in our cheery Spring finery.

FINDLAY MARKET OPENING DAY PARADE

The annual Findlay Market Opening Day Parade will begin at 12:00 PM so fans will have plenty of time to enjoy the parade before heading down to Great American Ball Park for the Opening Day Game against the Los Angeles Angels, which begins at 4:00 PM. I still love to look at the new styles, and there's always a cousin, niece, friend, neighbor or someone I know who can get still get me excited about picking the perfect dress for the big night. I also know that it's an evening that can be a huge expense, so I've tried to keep my choices to include some more moderately-priced gowns. I'm aware that these still represent a significant investment, but maybe I can at least give a taste of several different trends and styles, then you can scour the stores and the 'net for sales, coupons and special offers, and find your own perfect outfit for this big occasion.

RESISTING ARREST

Briana Lampley was an occupant with two other suspects of a car in Eden Park when she resisted arrest and fled in a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser at a high rate of speed.
